Nantucket Maritime Festival: About
The 6th Annual Maritime Festival took place at Children’s Beach and Brant Point Lighthouse on September 19, 2015. What a great day! The weather cooperated with us and many families and friends came out to enjoy all the activities under the tents, on the beach, and on the grass!
The purpose of the Maritime Festival is to celebrate the joy of living on an island and to experience time-honored maritime activities on and beside the sea that surrounds us. We collaborate with many Nantucket non-profits to provide a wide range of free activities that appeal to all ages.
The day started with a build your own boat contest that the Cyprus Pierce 8th Grade Oceanography class participated in, as well as classes from the Nantucket Lighthouse School and Nantucket New School. Needless to say, it was very entertaining for all those involved! And as tradition requires, the day ended with a oyster shucking contest with those watching reaping the benefits of free shucked oysters! We now have a Three Time Winner - Rocco Sorocco. Who will dare to challenge him this year?
It was a wonderful and fun day and we look forward to celebrating again with you on October 1, 2016.
